In a historic move for the state, Kerala’s updated school textbooks will now include the preamble to the nation’s constitution. The Kerala Government has taken this step as part of its efforts to instill constitutional ideals in the minds of children. According to officials, the preamble will be integrated into textbooks for classes 1 through 10.
According to Mr. V. Sivankutty, the General Education Minister and Chairman of the State Curriculum Committee, the State Curriculum Steering Committee recently approved 173 new textbooks for Classes I, III, V, VII, and IX, marking a crucial step in the initiated curriculum reforms.
According to Mr. Jayaprakash R K, the director of the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Kerala is taking a groundbreaking initiative by incorporating the preamble into its textbooks for the first time, despite the inclusion of the preamble in many NCERT textbooks. According to Mr. Jayaprakash R K, this marks a significant step as the Preamble will now be an integral part of all the revised state textbooks. Furthermore, according to him, this inclusion is not limited to textbooks alone; it will play a pivotal role in teachers’ training programs, fostering a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental principles outlined in the Constitution’s Preamble for both educators and students. Additionally, according to Mr. Jayaprakash, it is noteworthy that the language of the Preamble will align with the medium of the textbooks – in Malayalam for Malayalam textbooks, in Tamil for Tamil textbooks, and in Hindi for Hindi textbooks.
