The Australian government has introduced a series of policy measures to help overseas students participate in online learning amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Australia seeks to boost the education sector and maintain the continuum of student inflow in the universities. The country’s success in stopping the spread of infection has signalled growth of Australian education in a COVID-19 safe world.
The Australian government has declared three major changes to flourish education in the country—
- The country will recommence granting visas to international students who can travel to Australia once the borders reopen.
- Graduates with a student visa will be eligible to apply for post-study work visa outside Australia
- International students who faced a setback in finishing their degrees due to COVID-19 can lodge another visa application free of cost
The move comes as a gesture of appreciation and recognition of the immense support of international students—the backbone of Australia’s economy and local community development.
“These measures back the international education sector – our fourth-largest export sector – and will assist its recovery. In making these changes, we have been guided by the principles that the health of Australians is key, but that international students should not be further disadvantaged by COVID-19,” said Alan Tudge, member of the House of Representatives.
These announcements send an important and timely signal to students considering studying in Australia and give confidence that they can start applying for their visas now. Study Group has been working closely with partners across the Higher Education sector and government to strengthen our message to potential students, and these policies will help us show that Australia is putting its welcoming words into action. The principle is that international students can start their courses online and complete them onshore when borders reopen and it’s safe to do so,” commented Alex Chevrolle, Study Group Managing Director for Australia.
