Every year on January 24, people around the world commemorate International Education Day. The festival, which this year is in its fifth year, has as its motto “to invest in people, prioritise education.”
On January 25, the occasion will be commemorated at the UNESCO headquarters in New York. According to a UN press release, “International Day of Education 2023 will be a global platform to sustain political mobilisation, advance national commitments and global initiatives, and increase public engagement in favour of education as the road to peace, sustainable development, and individual and collective well-being.”
This year, UNESCO is honouring Afghan women and girls who have been denied the opportunity to receive an education. It demands that the ban limiting their access to school be immediately lifted.
Around the world, there are 771 million illiterate adults and 244 million children and teenagers who are not in school, according to UNESCO.
Nigeria and 58 other UN member states collaborated on a resolution that was adopted on December 3 by the UN General Assembly, displaying the “unwavering political determination to support transformative efforts for inclusive, egalitarian, and excellent education for all.”
