- As many as 75 families from this small village in the district of East Jaunpur have over 51 IAS and PCS officers
The Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and The Indian Police Service (IPS) are high-profile jobs but it is very difficult to clear these exams. Many students prepare for years to crack the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examinations and even after that most of them fail to get the desired rank. However, there is one particular village called Madhopatti in the State of Uttar Pradesh that is called the factory of IAS and IPS.
Madhopatti village has been the hometown of over 51 IAS and PCS (Provincial Civil Service) officers. Nearly 75 families from this small village in the district of East Jaunpur have officers in various sectors like IAS, Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Revenue Service (IRS) and IPS. This achievement has made Madhopatti, a village with the highest number of candidates working in civil services in India.
Usually, candidates appearing for such exams join renowned coaching classes. Surprisingly, there are no such coaching classes or training centres in Madhopatti. Even then the candidates have emerged successful in such large numbers in the UPSC exams because of their sheer dedication and hard work. The number of officers in this small village has been so high that during local festivals the entire village roads used to have cars with red and blue lights earlier. Interestingly, not only men but even women from this village have become IAS and IPS officers without any support of coaching classes or training.
According to sources, the village first came into limelight when candidates from one family became IAS officers. In 1995, Vinay Singh from this village became an IAS officer. Followed by him, other siblings joined him namely Chatrapal Singh, Ajay Kumar Singh and Shashikant Singh. Vinay Kumar Singh who cleared the exam in 1955, retired as a Chief Secretary of Bihar and his brother Chatrapal Singh also worked as the Chief Secretary of Tamil Nadu previously.
Chatrapal Singh and Ajay Kumar Singh had qualified Civil Services exam (for IAS officers post) in 1964. The last brother, Shashikant Singh also became an IAS officer in 1968. The record was extended by Sashikant Singh’s son, Yashaswi Singh who secured 31st rank in 2002 (Civil Service Examination) CSE. A number of people have chosen for a career in civil services, some youngsters from the village have also found successful careers with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) and the World Bank.
The village has become a trademark of having successful government officers, who have served for the country, with full integrity. The first civil servant from Madhopatti was Khan Bahadur Syed Mohammad Mustafa (father of poet Wamiq Jaunpuri). He joined the civil services (then the Indian Civil Services, during British India) in 1914. After that in 1952, Indu Prakash cleared the exam. The biggest achievement the village earmarked was in 1955, where Vinay Kumar Singh cracked the competitive exam.
Looking into the past for an explanation for this village’s feat, it is said that freedom fighter Thakur Bhagwati Din Singh and his wife Shyamrati Singh started educating children in the village in 1917. Initially, Shyamrati started by teaching the girls and soon, boys started queuing up too. Undoubtedly, Madhopatti village is now known as the factory of IAS and IPS. According to reports, Madhopatti village stands at par with the Ghahmar village known as the ‘Village Of Jawans’ in Ghazipur where every household has at least one member in the Army.
