Maharashtra’s Steering Committee has approved the phased implementation of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) curriculum for state schools from Class 3 to Class 12, starting in the 2025-26 academic year. The decision aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and aims to bring the state’s education system in line with national standards.
The transition will be carried out in stages, with the first phase covering Classes 1, 3, 5, 8, and 11. The government is focusing on ensuring a smooth shift by providing teacher training and updated learning materials that align with the CBSE framework.
CBSE Curriculum and NEP 2020
The CBSE curriculum follows the NEP 2020 guidelines, which introduce a 5+3+3+4 education structure. This reform strengthens early childhood education and promotes a holistic learning approach. The new framework prioritises critical thinking, problem-solving, and skill development over rote learning.
NEP 2020 also offers students greater flexibility in choosing subjects, encourages multilingual education, and incorporates continuous assessment to monitor academic progress. By adopting this structure, Maharashtra aims to enhance student performance in higher education and competitive exams.
Implementation and Expected Impact
To facilitate the transition, the Maharashtra government will focus on teacher training and pedagogy updates. Periodic evaluations will be conducted to address challenges and ensure the effectiveness of the new system.
Students will benefit from a more standardised and skill-based education, improving their readiness for tertiary education and professional careers. Aligning with CBSE standards is expected to enhance their performance in national-level examinations and open up better academic and career opportunities.
This shift marks a significant step towards modernising Maharashtra’s education system, ensuring students gain a competitive edge in a rapidly evolving world.
