For the first time, the Maharashtra government has introduced a dress code for school teachers. According to the guidelines, teachers are prohibited from wearing jeans, t-shirts, dark-colored clothing, or garments with bold designs or prints. Female teachers are advised to wear salwar or churidar with a kurta and dupatta, or a saree, while male teachers should opt for a tucked-in shirt and trousers.
The Government Resolution (GR), issued by the school education department on Friday, 15th March, 2024, emphasizes the importance of teachers being mindful of their attire. It highlights that school children can be impressionable and inappropriate clothing of teachers could have a negative impact on them. According to the GR, which outlines nine specific guidelines for the dress code of school teachers, it applies to all schools, regardless of whether they are public or privately operated and affiliated with a board. According to a senior official from the department, these guidelines should not be perceived as mandates. There is no decision yet on taking any action in case of non-compliance.
Another guideline highlighted is the introduction of the prefix “Tr” for teachers, similar to “Dr” for doctors and “Adv” for lawyers. This initiative, seeks to boost teachers’ morale by recognizing their profession.
According to Mr. Francis Joseph, Executive Director of GEMS Education India, the decision regarding the dress code for teachers is very disappointing. In an age of autonomy and empowerment, such decisions should be made by the concerned school leaders who understand their unique context and needs. According to Mr. Joseph, there are five potential mindsets behind this policy decision, including individuals disconnected from the future and those seeking to control teachers’ lives.
