State Government Implements Measures to Protect Students from Extreme Temperatures

by Triparna Ray

In response to rising temperatures and the growing threat of heatwaves, the Maharashtra government has mandated that all schools operate between 7:00 am and 11:15 am. The directive, issued by the state’s primary and secondary education department on March 28, applies to all schools, regardless of their medium or management.

Early School Hours to Ensure Student Safety

This decision is aimed at shielding students from the intense heat, following requests from various organizations to shift school hours to the cooler morning period. The government order ensures uniformity in school timings to maintain student safety.

Additional Measures to Prevent Heat-Related Illnesses

Apart from adjusting school hours, authorities have instructed schools to implement precautionary measures, including:

  • Ensuring classroom fans are fully functional.
  • Providing students with cool drinking water.
  • Educating students on preventing heat-related illnesses.
  • Prohibiting outdoor classes during extreme heat.
  • Encouraging students to consume seasonal fruits and vegetables to stay hydrated.

IMD Heatwave Warning and Rising Temperatures

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of persistent heatwave conditions in parts of southern Maharashtra until Sunday. Additionally, daytime temperatures in Gangetic West Bengal are expected to rise 3 to 5 degrees Celsius above normal.

Prioritizing Student Well-being Amid Climate Concerns

This move by the Maharashtra government highlights the increasing awareness of extreme weather’s impact on student health. Schools have been advised to strictly adhere to the guidelines to ensure a safe learning environment.
