Micro learning for just about anyone

“Micro learning tools have been of immense help to me, providing mind maps and notes that make study material easy to understand and remember,” says Gauri Aggarwal a grade 12 student of Suchitra Academy International School
Hyderabad. Like her several students across the globe now rely on platforms that offer solutions with detailed explanations and additional practical questions. Gauri adds, “I use them to supplement my textbooks and notes, especially when I am stuck, and rely on free websites like Brainly, Toppr, Vedantu, and others.”

With the advent of online content that is easily accessible and a variety of platforms to choose from, students can pick and choose the time to learn.  Teaching in short spells helps those students have problems of concentrating for long. Pallavi Sharma, Principal, Mamta Modern Senior Secondary School, Vikaspuri, New Delhi says, “Bite-sized micro-teaching has empowered our educators to deliver content in focused, goal-driven bursts, significantly improving classroom efficiency and learner engagement. In an English literature class, for example, instead of a full-period lecture on Shakespearean drama, the teacher uses short thematic capsules—each covering one literary device or scene—followed by a reflective discussion. This enables even hesitant learners to contribute meaningfully.”

She further adds, “Students retain more and participate actively because the bite-sized approach makes learning less intimidating and more interactive. It has brought clarity, pace, and personalization to our pedagogy.”

With information explosion, there is every chance that  a student consumes unnecessary information, it is the micro-teaching tools that have come to the rescue, providing focused and short pieces of content to the learner.

Micro learning mainly refers to learning activities that are generally performed on a small scale or within a limited time frame

It is essentially an approach used for structuring learning objects, which are used in e-learning. There are other terminologies used for microlearning, which include micro-learning, micro-e-learning, nano-learning, short-term learning, bite-sized learning, micromedia, short courses, or micro-content.

It is a tool for learners to skim as a refresher and remember the concept for assessments that measure their learning progress. A short scrolling page that focuses on what, why, and how cuts straight to the core information. These tools are designed to make the concept memorable and help the learner feel less overwhelmed in the onboarding process.

This type of teaching method distributes knowledge in smaller, concentrated bursts, encouraging the exchange of information and the application of learning.

This learning method is introduced so that students can avoid prolonged studying, as it causes learning fatigue, which varies among students. A study says that “Educators should break down complex concepts into smaller components to avoid cognitive overload and student burnout syndrome.”

Microlearning refers to physical aids like books and papers being replaced by electronic, digital, or online platforms. Using videos of experts answering specific questions, PDF downloads, infographics, digital guides, interactive diagnostics, and more helps students immensely.

Indian teachers are using microteaching through various methods:

  • Video Content – It helps them create short videos on platforms like Instagram Reels to cater to different learning styles.
  • Digital Platforms – They utilise educational apps such as BYJU’S – The Learning App and Unacademy to deliver bite-sized lessons.
  • Interactive Quizzes – Teachers incorporate quizzes and gamification elements to make learning fun and interactive.
  • Just-in-Time Learning – They use this to provide relevant information precisely when students need it, making learning more applicable and effective.

Bite-Sized Micro-Teaching Enhances Classroom Engagement

In 1885, research by the German psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus led to his Forgetting Curve. Spaced repetition, a technique where relevant information is reviewed at spaced intervals, can dramatically reduce memory loss among learners. Hence, the practice of bite-sized microteaching and learning methodologies creates an impactful process for the learner which constantly enhances the learning curve.

The ambitious vision, which prioritises individual growth over mere comparison, necessitates a revolution in how knowledge is delivered and absorbed. The curves of empowerment for the progress of the learner are definitely the need of the hour, and the duty of the educator is to transform the content to enhance the student’s learning curve.
