Ram Bahadur Rai, chairman of the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts put forward the idea that Ministry of HRD should start using the name of Ministry of Education. This was the name of the ministry before Ex- PM Rajiv Gandhi changed it in 1985.
The proposal was discussed in detail in a conference on Academic Leadership on Education for Resurgence organised by Research for Resurgence Foundation which is affiliated to Bharatiya Shikshan Mandal. PM Modi and HRD minister Prakash Javadekar came for the inaugural ceremony of the conference.
Rai told ET, “Treating education or humans as a resource is against Indian values that look at education more holistically. The word ‘human resources’ reeks of mechanisation and commercialisation… whereas education ministry depicts what the ministry should focus on, making education accessible and universal, not just creating Industry-ready graduates.”
Former HRD minister Pallam Raju clarified that in order to incorporate other areas like overall development and skilling that are essential for education, the name was changed.
