NCERT Issues Correction for Class 8 Social Science Textbook After Error Identified in Chapter on Judiciary

by Ranjith Subeditor

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has issued an important update regarding its Class 8 Social Science textbook, Exploring Society: India and Beyond, Vol II, following the discovery of an error in Chapter 4, titled “The Role of Judiciary in our Society” (pages 125-142). The issue was flagged after the textbook’s distribution, prompting NCERT and the Department of School Education & Literacy (Ministry of Education) to review the content.

Upon thorough review, it was noted that certain inappropriate material had inadvertently been included in the chapter. In response to this, the Ministry of Education directed that the distribution of the textbook be put on hold until further notice. NCERT complied with the directive and assured that the issue would be addressed promptly.

NCERT has expressed its deep regret over the inclusion of the unintended error, emphasizing that the organization holds the judiciary in the highest regard as the protector of the Indian Constitution and fundamental rights. The council clarified that the inclusion of the problematic content was not intended to question or undermine the authority of constitutional bodies.

The objective of the new textbook series, according to NCERT, is to foster constitutional literacy, promote respect for institutions, and enhance students’ understanding of democratic processes. In line with its commitment to academic integrity, NCERT will revise the content of the affected chapter in consultation with relevant authorities. The updated version of the textbook will be distributed to Class 8 students at the beginning of the 2026-27 academic session.

NCERT reaffirms its dedication to maintaining the sanctity of educational content and expresses its regret for the oversight. The organization remains open to constructive feedback to ensure that such errors do not recur.
