Princeton University mathematics professor, Manjul Bhargava, is spearheading efforts to update the NCERT curriculum for grades 3 to 12, aligning it with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 2023.
Prof. Bhargava is the first Indian-origin recipient of the prestigious Fields Medal in Mathematics. He is now serving as the co-chairperson of the National Syllabus and Teaching Learning Material Committee (NSTC) which contributes significantly to India’s educational reforms.
The updated grade 6 mathematics textbook introduces number patterns, aimed at enhancing critical thinking and problem-solving among students. The revisions also focus on reducing both physical and financial burdens by limiting textbooks to 200 pages and pricing them under Rs. 65.
While grade 6 textbooks have been released, updates for grades 7 and 8 are still in progress. Additionally, the NEP 2020 and NCF 2023 stress on bilingual education in science. This will help the first-generation learners better understand concepts in their native languages.
Prof. Arnab Bhattacharya highlights the need for inspiring content that fosters curiosity and lifelong learning. The updated curriculum moves away from rote learning towards logical thinking and a scientific mindset. Integrating arts and music with science education encourages creativity and interdisciplinary approaches.
Teacher training programs are underway to equip educators with the skills to implement these reforms. These initiatives aim to prepare students for a rapidly evolving and interconnected world.
