The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken charge of five cases involving alleged malpractices in NEET-UG from Bihar, Gujarat, and Rajasthan, officials revealed on 24th June. Media reports indicate that the probe agency has re-registered one case each from Gujarat and Bihar, as well as three cases from Rajasthan, as its own FIR. There are also expectations that the agency will assume control of one more case from Maharashtra’s Latur.
Apart from the Bihar case, the other four instances appear to involve isolated incidents of cheating and impersonation by local officials, invigilators, and candidates. According to official reports, the CBI team visited the Economic Offences Unit (EOU) office of the Bihar Police in Patna on June 24th concerning its inquiry into alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG medical entrance exam. The EOU had previously been spearheading the investigation until the central government mandated a CBI inquiry. From previous dealings, the EOU had already apprehended 18 individuals linked to the case.
