Oxford University announce a new building honouring late Ratan Tata, a project come to fruition due to the decade-long friendship between the Somerville College and the late Chairman Emeritus of the Tata Group late Ratan Tata.
The announcement of the construction of the Ratan Tata Building is set to represent a once in a generation opportunity for great expansion of the teaching and learning space of Somerville College, it also aims to support research within the College’s vision and promote a global impact by a sustainable and forward focused academic community. The construction will take place in Spring 2025.
The decade long partnership turned friendship between the Somerville College and the Tata Group Chairman Emeritus late Ratan Tata, now honouring late Ratan Tata plans for an infrastructure with new seminar rooms and offices that will exist alongside spaces for a shared study and interdisciplinary collaboration, reception rooms and accommodation for visiting academics is focused towards new growth and presents a once in a generation opportunity to the college.
Tata Group in support will also aims to create a permanent home for the Oxford India Centre for Sustainable Development (OICSD) within the new infrastructure. The Centre will occupy the last remaining plot of land available for development on the prestigious Radcliffe Observatory Quarter site, as mentioned in the press release.
N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of the Board of Tata Sons, said, “In Tata’s vision for India, research and critical inquiry went hand in hand with development and prosperity. This partnership with Somerville College is a tribute to Ratan Tata’s values. The building in his name will be home to research that is necessary and urgent for India.”
