Nipah Virus Outbreak leads to Closure of Schools in Kozhikode

Nipah virus outbreak in Kerala has led the government to close all educational institutes for a week in the Kozhikode district. Schools, colleges and tuition centres will all remain closed till September 24. Online classes will be conducted during this time, however. Veena Geirge, the Health Minister said that there are 1080 infected people and 130 more have been added to the list. 327 of them are healthcare workers.

22 people are infected from Malappuram, one from Wayanad and three from Kannur and Thrissur. 175 common people and 122 healthcare workers fall in the high-risk category. The number is expected to increase in the coming days. The first person to be infected with the disease died on August 30. People who attended his funeral have all been kept in isolation. Four of them who tested positive, are now under treatment.
