The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) Rankings 2024 were released by Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on 12th August 2024. The announcement event was held at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. Minister of State for Education Sukanto Majumdar along with other dignitaries was also present at the event. The NIRF Rankings are the most looked-forward-to rankings in the educational fraternity.
The NIRF Rankings, released annually, assess higher education institutions in India across 16 categories, including teaching, research, graduation outcomes, inclusivity, and perception. New categories added this year include state universities, skill universities, and open universities. Other categories include universities, colleges, research institutions, engineering, management, pharmacy, medical, dental, law, architecture, agriculture, and innovation.
In the latest overall rankings, IIT Madras was ranked as the best in the country, followed by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru in second place and IIT Bombay in third place. Under the engineering category, IIT Madras has again topped followed by IIT Delhi in second place and IIT Bombay in the third spot. For the medical category, AIIMS Delhi has been ranked as number one, with the second spot acquired by PGIMER, Chandigarh and third place acquired by Christian Medical College, Vellore.
A core committee established by the MHRD developed the framework for ranking institutions, defining key criteria for evaluating universities and colleges. These criteria encompass teaching, learning, and resources; research and professional practice; student outcomes; outreach and inclusivity; and overall reputation.
