by

It has been decided by the Odisha government on August 13, 2019, that in all state-run schools the duration of classes to be increased in three subjects – Mathematics, English and Science. Samir Ranjan Dash, School & Mass Education minister said the decision was taken after reviewing the performance of students in the matriculation (class X) examination. In these three subjects, the standard of students needs to be improved.

Dash said, “From existing 45 minutes to 90 minutes, the duration of classes will be extended in English, mathematics and science subjects.” After visiting several state-run schools in Delhi, he said in the state-run Odia-medium school there is a need to improve the standard of English.

The minister said that one school in each district will be identified to give emphasis on the English subject as we are planning to launch a pilot project. Before extending it to other schools, firstly the students’ performance in the examination will be judged.

Special emphasis needs to be given on the English subject as most of the students in Odia-medium schools failed in the English language.
