Pakistan Education Ministers Speculate School Closure

Pakistan Education Department is likely to schedule closure of education institutions amidst a possibility of COVID-19 spike during winter. In Pakistan, the continued rise in COVID-19 cases called for an immediate meeting about school closure presided by the Federal Minister for Education Shafqat Mahmood. Ministers from the four provinces accompanied by representatives from Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan attended the meeting.

The continuous rise in coronavirus cases across the country have parents worried about the wellbeing of children attending schools. Albeit the government is yet to arrive at a decision, it will continue to scrutinise the health of students, teaching and non-teaching staff.

“Rumours again afloat regarding school closures. It is again clarified that educational institutions are NOT being closed,” tweeted the Minister.

The country reported a massive spike in Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gilgit, Mirpur, Quetta and Peshawar. Pakistan has noted 1,123 new cases of infections taking the total number of infections to 335, 093 and 6, 849 deaths. As announced by Pakistan’s Health Minister, Dr Faisal Sultan, the country is looking forward to new restrictions and lockdown measures as the second wave of COVID-19 hits it.

“NCOC discussed additional measures today to control the rising spread of Covid19. Need to take immediate measures which have the most impact on disease spread without curtailing economic activity,” twitted Planning Minister Asad Umar.

About two weeks before the Eid Al-Fitr festival, the country had begun to ease some of the lockdown regulations.
