The Patna district administration has extended the school closure for students up to class 8 until June 19, 2024 due to the ongoing heatwave in the state.

Temperatures surpassed 44 degrees Celsius in 10 areas on Monday, June 17, 2024, subjecting Bihar to intense heat. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts that this heatwave will last for another two to three days.

On Monday, June 17, 2024, Patna District Magistrate Shirsat Kapil Ashok mandated the closure of all government and private schools in the district for students up to the 8th grade on June 18 and 19, 2024.  However, teachers and non-teaching staff are required to be present at their respective schools and offices. Due to the intense heat, some private schools in the state capital have already extended the summer vacation until June 22, 2024.

Aurangabad experienced the highest temperature at 46.9 degrees Celsius, with other areas such as Buxar, Dehri, Arwal, Bhojpur, Gaya, Bikramganj, Vaishali, Rajgir, and Nawada also reporting temperatures above 44 degrees Celsius.

A senior official from the Bihar Disaster Management Department has urged residents to minimize heat exposure, stay cool, and prevent dehydration amid this extreme weather.
