Yeshwanth Raj Parasamal, Founder and CEO of 21K School, Bengaluru has established over 75 educational institutions—including in tribal and naxal-affected areas. With 21K School, Asia’s largest online school, he is redefining the future of learning through flexibility, inclusivity, and personalisation. He shares his journey, insights, and vision to transform global education
You established over 75 educational institutions, are children the same everywhere?
Our education system assumes that aptitude varies with geography. But my work—from metros to tribal regions—has shown me that every child possesses natural intelligence. The difference lies in their environment, exposure, and opportunities. Unfortunately, schools often cater more to parental expectations than children’s true potential. That’s a problem. Education leaders must look beyond rote learning and focus on building skills, emotional wellbeing, and a nurturing experience. We shouldn’t build schools to please parents—we must aim higher.
What shaped your educational philosophy?
In 1992, I was failing Grade 9 and was labelled a ‘duffer’. My father hired a tutor, Mr. Devdas, who transformed my learning. He built a relationship with me, boosted my confidence, and showed me my capabilities. Looking back, it was personalised homeschooling with flexibility—exactly what 21K School offers today. I finished my Grade 10 syllabus that summer and ended up securing a distinction. This changed my life. That experience, along with seeing many children stuck in rigid systems, inspired me to create a school where children could thrive on their own terms.
What mindset shifts were needed to introduce Indian parents to online schooling?
Initially, it was tough. But more parents are now recognising the limitations of traditional schools. The narrative has evolved from “personality development” to “personalised learning.” In today’s world—with AI, LLMs, and abundant information—knowledge isn’t the differentiator anymore. What matters is how children think, collaborate, solve problems, and communicate. Parents are beginning to overcome conformist mindsets, but resistance to change still exists. Thankfully, the shift is happening faster than I expected.
Your book, The Parent’s Handbook to Reimagining School Education, challenges conventional schooling. What’s the most important insight parents should take away?
Parents must realise that the world their children are growing up in is vastly different. When we were in school, there was no internet, no digital payments, no AI assistants. Everything has changed—except the way we teach. The future demands skills like problem-solving, adaptability, collaboration, and clear communication. If schools don’t prepare children for that, we’re setting them up for irrelevance. Only a few hundred of India’s 15 lakh schools are doing this effectively.
How does 21K School maintain academic rigour and holistic growth in a remote-first model?
Academic rigour isn’t about long hours or heavy textbooks. It’s about curiosity, critical thinking, and intellectual engagement. Today, children can access far more information than any textbook provides. Our focus is on nurturing their passions through personalised learning paths, flexible pacing, and limited screen time. We rely on data-driven instruction and global exposure through virtual classrooms. Holistic growth comes from stimulating conversations, self-directed learning, and a deep understanding of their own interests and strengths.
21K students have participated in everything from TEDx talks to NASA camps. What helps them flourish?
Several factors. First, we respect children and don’t judge them by age or academic labels. That builds self-belief. Second, they aren’t overburdened—they sleep well, eat at home, skip tuition, and engage deeply in class. Low stress leads to better cognitive development. Third, our diverse classrooms—with students from various cities and countries—offer peer inspiration. Finally, our Academic Crew brings passion and love into every interaction. It’s a culture of joy and purpose.
What legacy do you hope 21K School leaves on the global education landscape?
We want to be remembered as the institution that helped children find their voice, discover their path, and lead fulfilling lives. Our mission is to flip how people see K-12 education—hence the name 21K School. It’s not just about academics; it’s about preparing children for a life of purpose and impact. If we can influence one child, one family, one community at a time, we’re on the right path.
Did the pandemic inspire 21K School, or was the idea already underway?
The idea began before the pandemic. It was sparked by a child in Grade 6 at Abhyuday School, Kawardha, who asked me why he couldn’t access the same education as his cousin in Pune. That question haunted me. During a 2016 visit to the USA, I observed online schooling models and began working on one tailored for India. We registered 21K School on 9 March 2020—just before the lockdown. The pandemic accelerated its adoption, but it wasn’t the origin.
What personal qualities helped you emerge as a disruptor in education?
I think it’s the intent. When you’re deeply invested in solving a real problem, it gives you clarity and energy. I’m passionate about education and genuinely want to see change. I stay grounded, keep learning, and try to maintain a growth mindset. Education shapes our future society, and I see every day as an opportunity to make a difference.
Entrepreneurship in education can be emotionally demanding. Your thoughts.
For me, it hasn’t felt stressful—because I love what I do. That said, none of this would have been possible without the support of my family. My wife Nupur and son Hriday are incredibly understanding. My wife is my pillar through highs and lows, and my son keeps me grounded and focused. They are my biggest cheerleaders and the reason I’ve stayed true to this journey.
