The Indian Institute of Technologies (IIT’s) are seeking to open up campuses abroad and expand their network and are seeking to open campuses in countries like UAE and Tanzania under a framework made by a panel from the ministry of education. Committees of other institutes, planning to do the same, are still discussing. The ministry of education sent a ‘concept note’ or guidelines to the Directors of the IIT’s, to keep in mind while working on the framework for the IIT campuses to be built offshore in foreign countries.
The reply in the form of a report was submitted to the ministry, by a team of sixteen members, lead by Dr. R Radhakrishnan, the chairman of the standing committee of the IITs. The report submitted highly suggests fully residential campuses to be set up with a 1:10 student-teacher ratio, an Indian element in the semester, and suggests JEE, Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) for UG programmes, SAT and Joint Admission Tests for Msc programmes. Post Doctoral courses will be offered to students clearing a set of written tests and the interviews. These steps are applicable for Indian, native and international students. The four areas that have been identified are IT and Computer Science; machine learning, electronics, data science, electrical and Artificial Intelligence; metallurgy, mining, petroleum; and energy.
