This marks a significant step towards improving educational access in these areas by foundation laying ceremony, conducting them virtually. Prime Minister Modi’s construction of five Eklavya Model Residential Schools in Garo Hills region of Meghalaya enhances the educational access in the area.
What is Eklavya Model Residential School?
Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS) is a government of India scheme for model residential schools, specifically for Scheduled Tribes across India. It was introduced to ensure tribal students get access to quality education in remote tribal areas.
The schools will be strategically located across three districts:
- North Garo Hills: Radi Village
- South West Garo Hills: Jellongpara
- South Garo Hills: Baghmara, Gasuapara, and Chokpot
The schools will be distributed across: South Garo Hills, South West Garo Hills, and North Garo Hills. In South Garo Hills, the schools will be located in Baghmara, Gasuapara, and Chokpot. South West Garo Hills will see a school in Jellongpara, while North Garo Hills will have one in Radi village.
The Eklavya Model Residential schools are designed to provide quality education to students in remote areas, with the potential to drive into broader regional development. This initiative has been expected to remarkably increase educational opportunities in the traditional Garo Hills region.
The Prime Minister’s decision to construct Eklavya schools and boost education was appreciated by Meghalaya’s Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma.
