On the occasion of National Science Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended greetings to the nation, celebrating India’s growing culture of scientific inquiry and innovation. He paid tribute to legendary physicist C. V. Raman, whose discovery of the Raman Effect remains a defining milestone in India’s scientific history.

In his message, the Prime Minister noted that National Science Day commemorates Raman’s breakthrough discovery, which earned him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930 and firmly positioned Indian research on the global scientific map. He underlined that the spirit of curiosity, research and innovation continues to be a key driver of national progress.

Reaffirming the government’s focus on science-led development, PM Modi said India remains committed to empowering young minds, strengthening research ecosystems and leveraging science and technology for national advancement and global welfare. In a post shared on X, he emphasised that innovation and knowledge are central to addressing contemporary challenges and shaping a resilient future.

The Prime Minister also referred to Indian scriptures, highlighting that when science and knowledge converge, they provide solutions, foster evolution and innovation, and help society overcome complex challenges.

Theme and National Celebrations

The theme for National Science Day 2026 is “Women in Science: Catalysing Viksit Bharat”, aligning scientific progress with India’s vision of becoming a developed nation. The theme places special emphasis on recognising and amplifying the contributions of women scientists, researchers and innovators across disciplines.

The national-level celebrations are being organised by the Ministry of Science and Technology, through its Department of Science and Technology, at Vigyan Bhawan. The programme will feature National Science Day lectures chaired by Ajay K. Sood, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India.

Key sessions will include discussions on indigenous aerospace and defence technologies, critical metals and advanced materials, and emerging communication platforms such as direct-to-mobile broadcasting. Through these deliberations, the celebrations aim to highlight how scientific leadership—particularly by women—can play a transformative role in building a self-reliant and developed India.

National Science Day is observed annually on February 28 to honour scientific excellence and inspire future generations to pursue inquiry, innovation and research-driven solutions.
