The district police of Thoothukudi town have started a drive called “Let’s Return to School” in the district because school dropouts are becoming young offenders due to their drug and alcohol addictions.
L. Balaji Saravanan, the superintendent of police in charge of the area, gave a speech at the event’s opening on Friday. He claimed that youths are used by criminals to commit crimes and are lured to drugs and alcohol after dropping out of school. Because of this, the police had taken the initiative to track down school dropouts and bring them back to classes.
There were 205 school dropouts in Thoothukudi Town alone, and parents of 60 of them were successfully persuaded to re-admit their children to the classrooms through counselling.
“If a teen who has run afoul of the law is found guilty, he or she will not be given a government position or even a passport to work overseas. Since private businesses have already begun requesting police reports before hiring anyone, their participation in any illegal activity will invalidate their efforts to obtain respectable employment. Mr Balaji Saravanan, who also spoke with the dropouts and their parents, stated that parents should teach their kids about dos and don’ts and gratitude while also ensuring that their education is uninhibited.
In order to encourage the public to be law-abiding citizens, the SP stated that the police had so far carried out the “In quest of change” programme at 2,405 locations in the district.
Ponnarasu, Sathyaraj, DSP, Thoothukudi Town, ADSP Karthikeyan, DSP, District Crime Records Bureau, and others took part.
