The President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu, conferred the prestigious National Awards on distinguished teachers from across the country at a ceremony held in the capital today, marking the celebration of Teachers’ Day.
In her address, President Murmu underscored the critical role teachers play in shaping individuals, families, and the nation. “Just as food, clothing, and shelter are essential for a person’s dignity and security, so too is education. Dedicated teachers instil this sense of dignity and empowerment in children,” she remarked, recalling her own fulfilling years as a teacher.
Teachers as Nation Builders
Highlighting the transformative power of education, the President said children from even the most disadvantaged backgrounds can achieve remarkable progress when guided by committed educators. She emphasised that the greatest reward for teachers is the lifelong respect and remembrance of their students, whose contributions enrich families, communities, and the country.
“Building the character of students is the foremost duty of a teacher,” she said, stressing that emotionally intelligent and morally responsible students are more valuable to society than those focused only on competition or bookish knowledge. She added that the coordination of intellect and emotion in a good teacher profoundly influences students’ development.
Smart Teachers Above Smart Classrooms
Acknowledging the importance of modern facilities such as digital classrooms and smart boards, President Murmu stated that “the most important element is the presence of smart teachers.” She defined smart teachers as those who recognise the unique needs of their students and make learning both effective and engaging through sensitivity and affection. Such teachers, she said, prepare students to meet the demands of society and the nation.
Education of Girls: A National Priority
Placing special emphasis on girls’ education, the President described it as “an invaluable investment in building our family, society, and nation.” She noted that the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 supports the expansion of Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas and other facilities to uplift girls from underprivileged backgrounds.
“The more teachers contribute to educating girls, the more meaningful their lives as educators will be,” she urged, encouraging teachers to extend special attention to students who are shy or come from disadvantaged sections of society.
India as a Global Knowledge Superpower
The President reiterated the NEP’s vision of establishing India as a Global Knowledge Superpower. She asserted that this goal could only be achieved if India’s teachers are recognised as among the best in the world, contributing across school, higher, and skill education.
“I am confident that with their dedication and contribution, our teachers will establish India’s place as a Global Knowledge Superpower,” she concluded, while congratulating the award recipients for their exceptional service to education.
