Reflections: Respecting Teachers – A Call to Restore Dignity in Education

I began my journey in the world of education not out of passion but out of necessity. However, I soon realised that what started as a simple obligation transformed into a profound love for my students. The teacher–student relationship blossomed into a strong bond, where I became not just an instructor but also a mentor, guide, and facilitator.

In the early days, there was a palpable respect from students towards their teachers. Parents not only valued teachers’ opinions but also held them in high regard.

Yet, I now find myself troubled by the current state of the teaching profession. Teachers are increasingly viewed with disdain, not just by parents but also by students. This shift raises difficult questions: How will this impact the future? Will the next generation still aspire to be teachers?

If they do, will they experience the same emotional connection that I cherished as an educator? Many students today aspire to become entrepreneurs, engineers, or doctors, but few dream of becoming teachers. Is this reluctance due to the profession’s inadequate financial rewards, or does it reflect a broader disillusionment with the teaching profession itself? As the renowned educator John Dewey once stated: “If we teach today’s students as we taught yesterday’s, we rob them of tomorrow.”

It is important to note that these reflections are not an emotional outburst but a deep concern arising from observing the changing dynamics around us. I wonder if this lack of motivation among teachers may be contributing to the situation. It is crucial that we respect and support those in the teaching profession; otherwise, we risk jeopardising the quality of education for future generations.

As Helen Keller wisely remarked: “The highest result of education is tolerance.” Without quality teachers, we may struggle to instil tolerance, understanding, and wisdom in the future leaders of our world.

Ultimately, I believe it is essential to recognise the integral role that educators play in shaping society. Let us work together to foster respect for the teaching profession, for it is through nurturing the next generation of teachers that we can ensure a bright and hopeful future.
