On #KargilVijayDiwas, a grateful nation pays homage to all those who served the nation during Operation Vijay. Our brave soldiers ensured that India remains protected and gave a befitting answer to those who tried to vitiate the atmosphere of peace.

Before moving on with our daily chores, let us know what this day is all about.

On July 26, 1999, India’s ‘Operation Vijay’ became successful as Indian Army defeated a 60 days-long armed war against Pakistan in the Kargil district of Kashmir and also near the Line of Control (LOC). Pakistani soldiers had infiltrated the Indian side of LOC by disguising as Kashmiri militants. It was already a belligerent atmosphere for both the countries as they had started nuclear testing, whose fumes were aired by the constant riots and separatist activities in Kashmir. The Pakistani infiltration was code namedOperation Badr’. The aim of the infiltration was to move away from the control of Indian armies over Siachen glacier and break the link between Ladakh and Kashmir. Indian troops found several infiltrations at different places and dates and linked the incidents to realize that the plan of attack was on a larger scale and just not jihadi activities. Governemnt of India under the leadership of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Army Chief Ved Prakash Malik responded against the infiltration with 200,000 Indian Jawans. 527 soldiers, according to the official record, sacrificed their lives for Mother India.

Present Day at Dras

The Indian Army will give a befitting reply to any Pakistani misadventure and is fully trained to tackle any contingency, said the Northern Army Commander Lt Gen Ranbir Singh at Dras. He also stated to the media that the situation in Kashmir is stable with violence parameters better this year. Being questioned on the aspect of human rights, he said, “The Indian Army is carrying out its activities in a professional manner. To the population, I will say that we respect human rights. During the conduct of operations, we ensure minimum collateral damage.”

The commander also warned with a message that no individual with terrorism in his/her mind will live to see another day after crossing the LOC.
