The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rain alert, leading to the closure of schools and colleges in Goa, Kerala, and Karnataka due to intense downpours.
In Goa, the government has declared holidays for all schools up to Class 12 after continuous heavy rains over the past three days. State Education Director Shailesh Zingde announced that all schools from Classes 1 to 12 will remain closed on Monday, July 15, 2024 while prioritizing student safety. The Kerala government has declared a holiday for educational institutions in several districts due to heavy rains.
Schools in Malappuram, Kozhikode, Thrissur, Ernakulam, Kannur, Wayanad, and Kasargod will remain closed today, July 15, 2024 although colleges in Kasargod will stay open.
The IMD has issued a red alert for Malappuram, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts, and an orange alert for Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kozhikode, and Wayanad.
In Karnataka, the Uttara Kannada district has been particularly affected. Deputy Commissioner Laxmipriya declared a holiday for all schools and PU colleges in Karwar, Ankola, Kumta, Honnavar, Bhatkal, Sirsi, Siddapur, Yellapur, Dandeli, and Joida taluks due to the red alert issued by the IMD.

The heavy rains in Karnataka are attributed to an offshore trough along the Maharashtra-north Kerala coast and a cyclonic circulation over the west-central Bay of Bengal, off the coast of Andhra Pradesh.
This weather pattern is channeling more moisture into Karnataka, resulting in vigorous monsoon conditions, according to the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC).
The IMD has issued a red alert for Uttara Kannada district from 1 pm on July 14 to 8:30 pm on July 16, 2024, anticipating continued heavy rainfall.
