As per the national education policies, it is now mandatory for all the regular schools to provide resource rooms for facilitating inclusive education for children with special needs. Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary education has issued guidelines for schools on the recruitment of a resource room teacher.
Resource room is a room where children with disabilities or learning difficulties receive extra individualised attention. The functions of a special educator include bridging the teaching-learning process for children with special needs. There will be a team of therapists and counsellors to back him up as well.
A special educator must possess a BEd in special education from a recognized university. A resource room teacher must be well versed in all disabilities. He/she must be able to identify children with problems using observation sheets/informal assessment. The teachers must be able to counsel parents at regular intervals, discuss about the progress of the children. A resource room teacher will ensure that children with special needs get similar opportunities as their peers in the school activities. They will act as the guiding light for these students and mould them into great citizens of the nation.
