Observing the continuous practice of carrying heavy school bags among children, the Madhya Pradesh government decided to observe ‘bag less day’ for students in schools for once a week. As per the directions of the government, the students of classes I to XII would be required to carry bags as per the weight decided by the school management committee. The decision has been taken to reduce the stress on children due to burden of their bags.
Witnessing the extreme stress taken by children due to burden of bags, School Education Minister Uday Pratap Singh said that officials categorised the weight of bags of students according to their class. The bag weight for, classes I-V would be up to 2.2 kg, for classes VI-VIII would be 4.5 kg and once a week go “bag less”. Bag less school would ensure that children enjoy that day, playing games, exploring sports activities, cultural programmes, music and various other activities.
The weight of the school bags for higher classes would be decided according to the stream of the students. The maximum weight of the school bag for students of class I and II would be 1.6-2.2 kg. Similarly, 1.7-2.5 kg for class III to V, 2-3 kg for class VI and VII, 2.5-4 kg for class VIII and 2.5-4.5 for students of class XI and X. Schools have been strictly asked to implement the school bag policy from the next academic year.
