The Haryana government declared on January 23 that all schools in the state from Class 1 to 5 will remain shut until January 27, considering the severe cold weather conditions. While the decision to close all government and private schools up to Class 5 has been made, the teaching and non-teaching staff are required to attend school as usual.
State education minister Kanwar Pal Gujjar stated that this choice was made in response to the unusually cold weather, leading to the extension of school holidays despite their decision of reopening them on Tuesday after a 22-day break.
Likewise, the Chandigarh administration has declared an extra week of winter break for students up to Class 5. However the administration further declared that schools may conduct classes for higher grades, but after implementing essential safety measures to shield students from the severe cold. The directive announcing the closure also specified that schools must conclude activities by 4 pm and shouldn’t commence classes before 9:30 am.
