National Science Day, observed on February 28, commemorates the discovery of the Raman Effect by Indian physicist Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman and celebrates India’s scientific achievements. The theme for 2024 is ‘Indigenous Technologies for Viksit Bharat’. With the aim of raising awareness about science day and its significance, Brainfeed will be featuring various perspectives and insights from School Leaders.
In light of this, we are delighted to share below an article by Ameer Khan, Principal of Abhaya School, Gundlapochampally.
National Science Day (February 28) marks the discovery of the Raman Effect by the first Asian and Indian Physicist Sir C V Raman. It has been celebrated in our school in a unique way to foster scientific awareness and inspire the next generation of scientists by our STEM TEAM and it’s not only on that particular day. We have an academic plan for the same which would be during the whole academic session.
- Theme Selection: We choose a relevant theme for the academic session to promote the scientific temper, as per G20 Sustainable Goals and its solutions.
- Interactive Workshops: We organized hands-on workshops where students participated in making the Bio Enzymes, where the same is used in school’s washing areas and washrooms. Students applied the same practice at their homes as well. The session was lead by Hitesh Shah and Sreedevi Potluri, Environmentalist.
- Science Exhibitions/fair: we have set up STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) exhibitions where kids from grade 6 onwards showcased innovative projects and encouraged students to present their findings through posters, models, and multimedia presentations.
- Guest Lectures at Birla Planetarium: As part of the astronomy block, our grade 6, 7 and 8 visited Birla Planetarium and the museum. Classes 8-10 visited National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) where they met renowned scientists, researchers and science educators. Students also attended inspirational talks and lectures where they shared their experiences, insights, and career paths in the field of Science and motivated students to pursue scientific careers. Class 8 students also visited the Meteorology Block to understand about radar, rain guage and many other topics. They also met and discussed about the topic “Climate change and awareness of the importance of Solar Energy” with the Solar Man of India- renowned professor, Dr. Chetan Singh Solanki.
- Science Competitions: Four of our students took part in CBSE Science Exhibition 2023 at Rockwell International School, Keesara speaking on the following topics –
a) MED BUDDY an app for patients to remind about medicines.
b) Computational thinking – Mathematics and Arts, which promotes and stimulates critical thinking and problem-solving skills among students. Career Guidance Sessions: on Saturdays we arrange career guidance sessions to inform students about various career opportunities in (STEM) fields by inviting professionals from different sectors to share insights about job prospects and academic pathways.
In this session, a talk has also been conducted by school parents who are running the project Waste2 energy –biogas plant. Kids also visited the plant at Bowenpally vegetable market and understood the production of biogas.
- Our visit to Agasthya Foundation Kuppam (Asia’s biggest research centre) was very inspiring for our kids to understanding STEM courses.
- Community Outreach programmes: As part of community outreach programmes we hosted the Science bus from CCMB –Gene–Health Connect Mobile Science Exhibition conducted by CCMB-CSIR initiative, inviting all the nearby schools. We could accommodate as many as 1000 kids in our schools and all the exhibits were explained by them. In this regard, teacher volunteers received appreciation certificates from Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB).
By implementing these strategies, National Science Day celebrations in our school can effectively promote scientific awareness, ignite curiosity and inspire the next generation of scientists to pursue careers in science and contribute to the advancement of society.
