Small Language Models: The Future of AI in K–12 Education

by Ranjith Subeditor

The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) in education has introduced a range of tools designed to enhance learning. However, large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT do not always provide the best fit for K–12 education due to their broad but often shallow knowledge base. An emerging alternative, Small Language Models (SLMs), offers a more tailored approach to AI in schools.

SLMs are AI models trained on specific datasets rather than vast internet-based information. This enables them to generate customised responses, making them highly suitable for educational settings. Unlike LLMs, which require significant computing power, SLMs operate efficiently with fewer computational resources, reducing costs for schools with limited budgets.

The primary advantage of SLMs lies in their precision. Unlike LLMs, which cover numerous topics without deep specialisation, SLMs can focus on subject-specific learning, offering more relevant insights. Additionally, these models can enhance classroom engagement by powering interactive educational chatbots, enabling simulations and Q&A sessions tailored to curricula.

A key concern in AI adoption for education is ethical considerations and student safety. SLMs present a safer alternative as they are less prone to biases and misinformation. Their training can be aligned with institutional values and safety guidelines, ensuring an ethical AI application in schools.

Moreover, SLMs provide valuable support to educators. These models can assist in identifying student learning patterns, alerting teachers when pupils struggle with course material. Additionally, they can streamline administrative tasks, freeing up time for educators to focus on teaching.

Despite their benefits, SLMs come with certain challenges. Initial implementation requires investment in training and customisation. Additionally, they may struggle with complex reasoning tasks compared to LLMs. However, advancements in AI continue to improve their capabilities, making them an increasingly viable solution for education.

As AI becomes integral to modern learning, K–12 institutions must determine the most effective tools to enhance education. With their cost efficiency, personalisation, and safety features, SLMs offer a promising future in the educational technology landscape.
