Social-Emotional Learning to Take Center Stage in 2025 Education, Says Dr. Maithili Tambe

In a groundbreaking shift in education, 2025 will see a significant emphasis on Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) and mental well-being as core components of the school curriculum. This paradigm shift comes in response to the growing awareness of the mental health challenges faced by students due to the disruptions and uncertainties of recent years.

Dr. Maithili Tambe, CEO of The Academy School (TAS), Pune, highlights the urgent need for such initiatives. “The past few years have profoundly impacted students’ emotional resilience. We have witnessed increased cases of anxiety, depression, and social isolation among young learners. As educators, we must create systems that prioritize their emotional and social well-being,” she said.

Comprehensive SEL programs are being implemented across schools, with mindfulness practices now becoming integral to the curriculum. “Mindfulness is not just a buzzword; it’s a powerful tool to help students cultivate self-awareness and foster meaningful interpersonal connections. By incorporating these practices, we’re helping them build a strong foundation for emotional regulation and resilience,” Dr. Tambe explained.

These SEL programs aim to equip students with essential life skills such as empathy, conflict resolution, and the ability to manage emotions effectively. “At TAS, our focus is on developing well-rounded individuals who can navigate the complexities of modern life with confidence and compassion. Academic success is important, but it’s equally crucial to nurture the mental health of our students. After all, education is about shaping the whole individual,” she emphasized.

The holistic approach to education in 2025 will create a supportive environment where students feel safe and empowered to express themselves. Dr. Tambe believes this shift is vital for the future of education. “When we recognize that mental health is as critical as academic achievement, we pave the way for a generation of emotionally resilient and socially conscious individuals. This is the future of education,” she concluded.

With educators and mental health professionals joining forces to prioritize SEL, the educational landscape is set to transform, ensuring that the well-being of students remains at the forefront of the learning experience.
