XUSOM today is named in the Top 10 Caribbean Medical Schools.
For all those medical education aspirants who always wished to study in India and abroad, the wait is over. The Xavier University School of Medicine’s 6-Year Pre-Med To Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) Program with KLE Belagavi begins in September 2023. It is a well-known fact that international students find it tough to get admitted into medical schools in the U.S.A. and Canada but the program is so structured that Indian students can complete their clinical training in the U.S.A at Xavier’s affiliated and accredited teaching hospitals and clinics.
Students completing the M.D. program at Xavier University can apply for P.G. training/residency match in the U.S.A. and Canada. Xavier University has decades of experience guiding its students into competitive residency positions. Every year, Xavier graduates match for residency training in disciplines like Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Family Medicine, Psychiatry, and Surgery, including plastic surgery, neurology, and other fields.
Doctor of Medicine Program
Students will complete their first two years of pre-med at KLE’s campus in Belagavi. After completing the premed program, students will automatically progress to study preclinical sciences (Basic Sciences) at Xavier University Aruba. The final two years of hands-on clinical training will be completed in the U.S.A. and Canada at ACGME-approved hospitals.
Phase 1: Premed (2 years in India)
The first phase of this program is a 2-year premedical program. The premed courses are designed to provide students with the educational foundation for medical school. The faculty at Xavier have developed the curriculum to meet the requirements to progress to the M.D. program.
Phase 2: Preclinical / Basic Science (2 years in Aruba)
After completing the premed program, students will automatically advance to Xavier’s MD program. During the first two years (Basic Science), Xavier University uses an “integrated system-based curriculum model” as tested in the U.S. and Canadian licensing examinations. Xavier also has small class sizes that allow individualized mentorship from our highly-qualified faculty from the first day. Xavier has had a more than 95% first-time pass rate for the USMLE every year for many years.
Phase 3: Clinical Rotations (2 years in the U.S.A./Canada)
This final phase will have students completing 84 weeks of clinical training in hospitals in the U.S.A. and Canada. Students will receive hands-on experience working with patients at Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) approved teaching hospitals. Xavier is affiliated with more than twenty ACGME-accredited hospitals throughout the United States and Canada. Our affiliations are constantly expanding to provide more quality training sites to our students worldwide.
The Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Program too has three phases and after two years of pre-med training at KLE, students will automatically progress to complete three years of the DVM program in Aruba. This will be followed by one year of clinical experience in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and other countries. Xavier’s veterinary program has already applied for accreditation with CAAM-HP and other agencies.
