Several students in multiple schools across at least three districts in Bihar fell unconscious due to extreme heatwave conditions on May 29th. Bihar recorded its highest-ever maximum temperature of 47.7 degrees Celsius in Aurangabad on May 28th. The state is experiencing scorching heat, with daytime temperatures exceeding 44 degrees Celsius in several areas on May 29th.
The Bihar Chief Secretary, Brajesh Mehrotra, convened a high-level meeting on May 29th to assess the preparedness of relevant departments in response to the extreme heatwave affecting the state. According to Pratyaya Amrit, the Additional Chief Secretary of the Disaster Management Department, the meeting of the crisis management group was scheduled to review the departments’ readiness in light of the severe heatwave conditions.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted that heatwave conditions will likely continue in the state for another three to four days. A senior official of the Bihar Disaster Management Department advised people to avoid heat exposure, stay cool, and prevent dehydration.
