Leaders establish worlds and leadership skills can only form leaders. Schools should prioritize in instilling leadership skills within the students so that a better community can be developed. Mr. Neil Guha, Principal of CS Academy, Coimbatore, explained why student leadership skills should be prioritized and how it can be implemented in schools.
Q) According to you why students should learn leadership in schools?
Students should learn leadership in schools because it equips them with essential skills for success in various aspects of life beyond academics. It helps them to develop qualities like communication, teamwork, decision-making, and resilience, which are invaluable in navigating the complexities of the real world. Integrating leadership education into school curricula prepares students to excel not only academically but also as ethical, empathetic, and capable leaders in their future endeavors.
Q) What should schools do to implement leadership skills within students?
To foster leadership skills, schools should integrate leadership education into the curriculum, while offering opportunities like participation in the student council. These roles empower students while providing real-world leadership experience within the school community. Additionally, schools can organize workshops, mentorship programs, and service projects to further develop students’ leadership abilities and to create avenues to demonstrate leadership.
Q) How does your school support and empower students to take initiative and lead projects?
At our school, a vibrant student council sets the tone for student leadership. They initiate and oversee various projects, ranging from school events to community service initiatives. Additionally, students are encouraged to form their own clubs, covering diverse interests such as mental health awareness, debate, and environmental activism. These student-led clubs provide a platform for students to take ownership of their passions, plan events, and make a positive impact. Through these clubs and projects students collaborate, innovate, and develop essential leadership skills, enriching our school community.
Q) What advice would you give to students who are interested in developing their leadership skills?
For students interested in developing their leadership skills, my advice would be to actively seek out opportunities to take on leadership roles and responsibilities. Get involved in extracurricular activities, clubs, or community organizations where you can practice communication, teamwork, decision-making, and problem-solving skills. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and take on challenges that stretch your abilities. Remember that leadership is not just about directing others but also about listening, learning, and collaborating effectively. Embrace failure as a learning opportunity and always strive to improve and grow as a leader. Most importantly, stay true to your values and lead with integrity, empathy, and a commitment to serving others.
