Global Teacher Prize 2019 by Varkey Foundation has announced its Top 10 Finalists from across the world. Now in its fifth year, the US$1 million award is the largest prize of its kind and Dr. Swaroop Sampat Rawal, Gujarat’s Masterji, through her inspiring educational initiatives, has brought India under this illustrious banner.
The only Indian to be selected from more than 10,000 nominations and applications from 179 countries, Dr. Swaroop, actor and Miss India 1979, has made astounding contributions to education.
- She brought 450 out-of-school tribal children back to school
- She reaches 5 ½ lakh teachers with the life skills through drama project
- Her girl students prevented child marriages, got their villages to be open-deification free, stopped abuse of tobacco and sale of tobacco near schools
In an interview with Brainfeed, she shared her thoughts saying, “What I do is teach, not only in one classroom or in one school or in one state. I want to change the lives of all the children in my country and influence teachers and educationalist worldwide.”
The Global Teacher Prize was set up to recognize one exceptional teacher who has made an outstanding contribution to the profession. As per the reports, the original top 50 shortlist, announced in December 2018, “featuring teachers from 39 countries, was narrowed down to ten finalists by a Prize Committee. The winner will be chosen from this ten by the Global Teacher Prize Academy. All ten finalists will be invited to Dubai for the Award ceremony at the Global Education & Skills Forum (GESF) on Sunday 24 March, where the winner will be announced live on stage in a red carpet gala event.
