Maj Karttikeya Sharma joined as a Second Lieutenant and left as a Major in the Indian Army. After leaving the Army he joined the G D Goenka Public School in Vasant Kunj, New Delhi as school as administrator in May 1995. He has been with the group all through except for two years in between when he took a sabbatical. He is now with the G D Goenka University.
Major Karttikeya joined the school at a time when schools in India were transforming. He says, “GD Goenka Group had just entered into the education world with first of its kind school in the country which focussed more on extra-curricular activities and had air conditioned buses and mineral water for children. They also sat in air conditioned classrooms. The Education in India changed with this new version of school which talked about Global Education with a conducive environment for students. We had music, dance, aerobics yoga and other activities in school way back in the year 1995 -96.”
He further added that the school faced some bad press but was a trend setter for the Indian education sector. G D Goenka introduced yellow school buses in India which came as huge relief for parents. We had a Lady Nanny and a Security Guard on the bus to assist the driver and conductor.
Major Karttikeya’s stint with the Army proved to be useful. While in the force, he was commissioned into the Regiment of Artillery and worked in international border near Fazilka in Punjab, was a part of the team at Roti post which pushed back the enemy, fired the 155mm Bofors Gun in Devlali Field firing ranges. These experiences hardened him and stood him in good stead. He says, “In my last posting at Meerut we took up a lot of welfare measures for children of other rank and war widows.”
Students went to the best of the Universities like the London School of Economics, Lancaster and other top notch Universities in the US like John Hopkins. “I was involved in all aspects of student life on campus having lived on campus myself for six years 24/7 involving in soft skills, etiquette, excursions, games and events.”
