The Taliban rulers of Afghanistan has banned university education of women in the country. After coming back to power they had promised a softer rule. However, the catastrophic stance is in far contrast to their promise. It is a blot on women’s right to education and freedom. Several nations have condemned Taliban’s resistance to woman higher education, particularly USA.
The ban comes in less than three months after thousands of Afghan women sat for university entrance exams across the country. Many of these women want to pursue teaching and medicine as their career path. After Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan a year back, universities were forced to follow new rules. Gender-segregated classrooms and entrances were made and female students were only allowed to be taught by women and older men.
Spokesperson of the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said, &The Secretary General reiterates that the denial of education not only violates the equal rights of women and girls, but will have a devastating impact on the country’s future”. The situation of higher secondary education for girls is also severing. Most teenagers are banned from pursuing their higher secondary level of education, thereby, limiting their scope to enter universities.
