In a significant performance shift, rural districts in Tamil Nadu have once again outperformed urban areas in the Class 12 board examination results announced today. The overall state pass percentage stands at 95.03%, a slight uptick from last year’s 94.56%, with girls outperforming boys as usual.
Key Highlights:
- Girls secured a pass percentage of 96.7%, compared to 93.16% for boys.
- Among the 7.92 lakh students who appeared, over 26,000 students achieved centum scores.
- Computer Science led the subjects with the most centums (9,536), followed by Computer Applications (4,208), Chemistry (3,181), and Mathematics (3,022).
Rural Districts Dominate
Districts such as Ariyalur (98.82%), Erode (97.98%), Tiruppur (97.53%), Coimbatore (97.43%), and Kanniyakumari (97.01%) recorded the highest pass percentages, underscoring the consistent performance of rural schools.
Their dominance extended to government schools as well, with Ariyalur, Erode, Tiruppur, Kanniyakumari, and Cuddalore leading in performance.
Education experts credit government initiatives for this trend. “The government provides numerous schemes that directly benefit rural and government school students, motivating them to perform better,” said education analyst Jeyaprakash Gandhi.
Focus Shifts to Excellence
Tamil Nadu School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi praised the improvement in government school results and announced a new target: “Now that we’ve achieved high pass percentages, we’ll focus on helping government school students secure top ranks, including centums.”
Inclusion and Progressive Initiatives
- 130 out of 140 prisoners who appeared for the exam from across Tamil Nadu’s correctional facilities passed.
- 7,466 of 8,019 differently-abled students also cleared the exams.
Meanwhile, Puducherry, which follows Tamil Nadu’s curriculum, posted impressive results too. Girls in Karaikal district achieved a 100% pass rate, and boys from government-aided schools also passed in full.
Second Chance in June
To support students who didn’t clear one or more subjects, supplementary exams will be held in June 2025, ensuring they still qualify for college admissions this year.
