In a move aimed at reforming the education sector across Telangana, the state government has officially established the Telangana Education Commission (TEC). The announcement was made on Tuesday, highlighting the government’s commitment to addressing critical challenges in education from early childhood through to higher and technical education.
The decision comes in response to concerning findings from the National Achievement Survey (NAS) 2021, which revealed subpar student learning outcomes and a decline in research output at universities. These issues highlight a broader problem: a disconnect between educational outcomes and market demands for skilled professionals.
Five-Member Commission
The newly formed TEC will be a five-member body, consisting of a chairperson, three education specialists, and a member secretary of departmental head rank. The non-official members will serve a two-year term, during which the commission is tasked with developing a comprehensive policy for educational reform.
Scope and Responsibilities
The commission’s primary objectives include:
– Early Childhood Education: Promoting the universalisation of early childhood education through pre-primary schools situated on primary school campuses.
– Holistic Development: Enhancing foundational skills from primary through higher education and focusing on the holistic development of students.
– Higher Education and Employability: Integrating apprenticeship and employability skills into higher education to ensure students are prepared for the current job market.
– Value-Based Education: Fostering an egalitarian, values-based education to cultivate responsible global citizens.
To achieve these goals, the TEC will consult widely with stakeholders and engage experts and consultants. It will also utilise Education Department employees on a deputation basis as needed.
The commission will be financed through a combination of state budget allocations and private sector partnerships. Specific details regarding the terms of service for commission members and administrative expenditures will be outlined in a subsequent order.
