India’s education system is set to undergo significant changes starting from the 2026-27 academic year, with the introduction of twice-yearly board examinations. The Union Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, announced the initiative on Wednesday, marking a key step in implementing the National Education Policy (NEP) reforms.
In addition to the biannual board exams, plans are also underway to adopt a semester system for students in Classes 11 and 12. These changes aim to enhance the flexibility and effectiveness of the senior secondary education framework.
According to the minister, both initiatives are integral components of broader reforms intended to modernise the education system and align it with the NEP’s vision. The reforms aim to provide students with greater opportunities to demonstrate their learning and reduce the stress associated with traditional, high-stakes examinations.
The introduction of these reforms reflects India’s commitment to fostering a more inclusive, student-centred approach to education. As preparations continue, stakeholders anticipate a smoother transition towards this progressive academic structure.
