The Assistant Professor post will not require PhD as a necessary job requirement anymore: UGC Chairperson

by admin

M Jagadesh Kumar, Chairperson, University Grant Commission, says that central universities will not see a doctorate of philosophy, PhD, as a job requirement for the position of Assistant Professor.

M Jagadesh Kumar mentioned that NET qualification will be sufficient for the same during the inauguration of the UGC-HRDC building on the Osmania University (OU) campus.

The decision has been taken taking into consideration the professionals without a PhD degree. The opportunities were previously lacking for those who were experts in terms of teaching but were unable to be appointed because they lack a PhD degree.

One nation- one data portal is in the development process and it aims to offer all UGC guidelines and other important details to the candidates. From next year, quality education is to be extended directly to students via the National Digital University.

The Central government had previously released the Commission’s regulations mandating PhD for hiring assistant professors. The new guidelines were supposed to be implemented in 2021 but due to the Covid-19 pandemic got postponed. It is assumed to be implemented by July 2023.
