Learning hasn’t been always limited within books, it happens genuinely when someone explore on something and try to get their hands on it. That’s why schools nowadays, are implementing Project Based Learning (PBL) so that students might get to learn more, outside of textbooks. Ms Sapna Sukul, Educational Consultant at Edu Start Solutions, New Delhi, explained how and why PBL should be implemented in schools.
Q) How do you incorporate PBL?
Ans – The skills for future can be taught very well through PBL. I recommend teachers to implement PBL (Project Based Learning), starting from junior sections to senior schools. Mostly it revolves around questions, you can’t do Project Based Learning through rote Learning. Sometimes we tell students to read books and then jumble up the words from it before making it into a story.
Q) How much PBL can make students engaged to Learning?
Ans – PBL engages in developing students’ curiosity, enables them to think why? It also initiates appreciating and respecting each other’s ideas. Through PBL different forms of instructions can be given to each student. Teachers need to get charged up in this procedure as students will know from teachers only. Students need to step out of the classrooms to seek practical learning. So learning happens here and also students get involved with it as they do it in groups. We are doing this since 2014.
Q) How do you handle challenges or obstacles that arise during PBL implementation?
Ans – PBL happens step by step, as students give up, occasions and functions including holidays suddenly come up; students also take much time to finish their projects.
Q) How do you structure your projects to ensure they align with learning objectives?
Ans – Outcome is necessary. Teachers always need to remind students of the objectives, that’s how outcomes can align with the objectives. Learning objective has to map with learning outcome, teachers are trained by hands on activity, project based learning is more fun, engaging, long term retention and enjoying the process of learning while studying.
