The Transformative Power of Reading: A Vision for Future Leaders

by Ranjith Subeditor

In today’s fast-paced world, reading stands as a timeless pillar in shaping the leaders of tomorrow. According to Sowmya Marimganti, Principal and Managing Partner of Vaarahi Group of Schools, “Reading is a gateway to endless possibilities, shaping students into future leaders.” With her unwavering belief in the power of books, Marimganti has witnessed first-hand the profound impact that cultivating a love for reading can have on students.

“Today’s Readers are Tomorrow’s Leaders,” she states, highlighting the importance of nurturing a habit that inspires students to dream big and make impactful decisions. Marimganti believes that reading fosters critical thinking, empathy, and creativity—traits essential for effective leadership. She explains, “Each book opens a world of ideas, broadening perspectives and building confidence,” further emphasising how these qualities set the foundation for students to step into leadership roles. Many of the world’s great leaders, she notes, attribute their success to their love for reading.

Vaarahi Group of Schools has taken significant steps to nurture this habit in its students. The school actively promotes reading through initiatives such as literary festivals and “Reading Week,” where students, teachers, and parents come together to explore books and share insights. “Programmes like the ‘Readers’ Assembly’ promote a community of learners who inspire one another,” Marimganti says, highlighting how these events create an environment where learning thrives through shared experiences and enthusiasm for reading.

The results of these initiatives are already evident, with students transforming ideas from books into tangible projects. One such example is the environmental awareness campaign driven by students, inspired by books they had read. These initiatives show that when students embrace reading, they not only gain knowledge but also take leadership in bringing about meaningful change.

However, Marimganti is quick to point out that building a reading culture requires a collective effort. “Building a reading culture involves teachers recommending books, parents promoting reading at home, and schools collaborating with libraries and using technology like e-books to make reading accessible,” she explains. This holistic approach ensures that reading is integrated into the fabric of everyday life, making it an integral part of the learning process.

For Marimganti, reading is more than just an academic skill—it is a legacy that empowers children to innovate and lead. “Let’s work together to ensure every child discovers the joy of reading and the boundless opportunities it offers,” she concludes, reinforcing her vision for a future where every child has the tools to excel and lead in the world.
