The Union education ministry launched the ‘New Curriculum Framework’ for school education, in concurrence with National Education Policy 2020 (NEP). As per the framework, board examinations will now be conducted twice a year, with students being allowed to retain their best scores. The Board exams will now asses the understanding and achievement of specific competencies of students rather than knowledge gained through memorization and coaching.
School boards would be developing their capabilities to offer ‘on-demand’ exams in the future. As per the framework, the Board exam test developers and evaluators would be going through university-certified courses before taking up exam development work.
Apart from this, there are changes in the composition of subjects for 11th and 12th standard students. The choice of the subjects will not be restricted to any streams, with students getting the flexibility to choose the subjects they prefer. These students will now need to study two languages with at least one language being of Indian origin.
According to the Union Minister of Education, Dharmendra Pradhan, the textbooks, based on the new curriculum framework, will be developed for the 2024 academic session. The process of just ‘covering’ the textbooks, in classrooms, will be avoided and the cost of the textbooks will also be revised as per optimal standards.
