Contractual teachers in Kendriya Vidyalaya has increased more than three times since a freeze in the recruitment of regular teachers in the central-run schools. The number of contractual teachers against regular teachers was 3260 in 2020-2021. Now that has increased to 10,462 in 2022-2023. Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, the body that manages the chain of centre-run schools have posted 12,099 vacancies that remains for recruitment.
In 2021-2022 there was a significant drop in the number of contractual teachers who were recruited in Kendriya Vidyalaya. Whereas in 2018-19 and 2019-20 there were 9,539 and 8,912 contractual teachers respectively who were recruited in the centre-run schools, in 2020-2021 it came down to 3260. This is because of the recruitment drive that happened in 2019. The 12,099 regular vacant posts that Kendriya Vidyalaya has advertised includes 6150 seats for the unreserved category, 3254 for OBCs, 1802 and 893 for the SC and ST communities respectively.
“Vacancies arise due to retirement, resignation, promotion and additional requirements on account of upgradation/sanctioning of new streams as well as enhancement of students’ strength. Filling up of vacancies on a regular basis is a continuous process and efforts are made to fill up the vacancies as per the provisions of the relevant recruitment rules of concerned Institution. Teachers are engaged on contractual basis for temporary duration by Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) to ensure that the teaching-learning process is not hampered,” stated the government
