In today’s educational landscape, space education and astronomy stand as vital pillars, fostering a blend of creativity, critical thinking, and curiosity among students. In this enlightening interview, Dr. Ajit Singh, Vice President Academics – Astronomy, Orchids The International School, illuminates how space education enhances students’ learning experiences and aligns optimally with the school’s educational philosophy.

Q. What is the importance of space education and astronomy in School Education? How does your School integrate space education and astronomy into the curriculum?

Students take part in stargazing.

Space science and astronomy have fascinated people in India and abroad since ancient times. Some of our earliest mathematicians, such as Aryabhatta and Bhaskaracharya, were renowned for their astronomical discoveries. This historical interest highlights the intricate link between space science and three key aspects of elementary education: understanding math, fostering creative thinking, and fueling curiosity. At Orchids, we aim to nurture these skills in our students from a young age.

To achieve this, we provide astronomy sessions for students as young as 5-6 years old. Our curriculum integrates space education and astronomy in a multi-pronged approach. Students engage in planetarium sessions and activity-based learning in our space labs. From grade 5 onwards, students gain real-life exposure to astronomical exploration through space camps. To further spark and support curiosity, our students participate in our in-house Discord club, Astroverse. Throughout the year, we offer hands-on learning experiences through various competitions and Olympiads, both internal and external. This comprehensive approach ensures that our students develop a deep and lasting interest in space science and astronomy.

Q. What resources and tools does your school utilize to enhance students’ understanding of space-related concepts?

To enhance students’ understanding of space-related concepts, we utilize a variety of resources and tools. Our primary focus is on activity-based learning, where students grasp concepts by actively engaging in hands-on activities. For instance, students learn about gravity using specialized weighing machines that display their weight on different planets. Additionally, students gain an understanding of centrifugal force by attempting to place rings on a spinning model of Saturn. We also make extensive use of audio-visual tools, as they are more effective at capturing students’ attention compared to traditional in-class didactic teaching methods.

Q. Can you share examples of hands-on activities or projects related to space education that students engage in at your school?

At our school, we incorporate a variety of hands-on activities and projects related to space education, tailored to different grade levels. In the lower grades, students learn fundamental concepts such as the importance of light and water for survival on a planet. They engage in projects that help them understand the concept of optimal temperature. As students progress to higher grades, they delve into more advanced topics, such as rocket physics and the mechanics of black holes. To support these learning experiences, we provide models and kits in our well-equipped astronomy lab.

Q. How does your school foster interest and enthusiasm among students for learning about astronomy and space exploration?

Our school fosters interest and enthusiasm for learning about astronomy and space exploration through a variety of engaging and supportive activities. Visual cues and periodic engagement play a crucial role in maintaining students’ interest. We encourage and support our students in participating in both national and international competitions.

The Astroverse club on Discord is another key element, providing regular entertaining videos and discussions that keep students engaged. Additionally, we organize a monthly mass telescope viewing activity at our schools, where students gather for a mini picnic-like experience, enhancing their enjoyment and curiosity about the night sky.

To further cultivate critical thinking and problem-solving skills, Orchids conducts events such as the Astro Fair, “Go Cosmo-Your Ticket to Space.” This fair is designed to give students a deeper understanding of fascinating space concepts, nurturing their enthusiasm for astronomy and space exploration.

Q. What role do guest speakers or experts in the field of astronomy play in enriching students’ learning experiences at your school?

Guest speakers and experts in astronomy are integral to enhancing students’ learning experiences at Orchids the International School. Their insights, experiences, and expertise provide unique perspectives and real-world applications beyond traditional classroom teachings. With our astronomy curriculum starting this year, inviting guest speakers and experts for specialized sessions will further enrich students’ educational journey.

Q. How does your school leverage technology to supplement teaching and learning in the field of space education?

Orchids prides itself on being at the forefront of educational technology, particularly in the realm of space education. We have integrated cutting-edge tools and resources into our curriculum to provide students with immersive learning experiences. Through virtual reality simulations, students can explore celestial bodies and phenomena in a way that traditional methods cannot replicate. Additionally, our school utilizes interactive apps and software that allow students to conduct virtual experiments and simulations, reinforcing their understanding of complex concepts in astronomy and space science. Furthermore, we leverage online platforms and databases to access real-time data from space missions and telescopes, enabling students to engage with the latest discoveries and developments in the field. By harnessing technology in this way, we ensure that our students are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to excel in the ever-evolving field of space exploration.

Q. In what ways does teaching space education and astronomy align with your school’s overall educational goals and philosophy? What are the school’s future plans in this regard?

At Orchids, fostering creative problem-solving skills is paramount to our educational goals. Astronomy serves as an ideal avenue for nurturing creativity, determination, and critical thinking – the very essence of our educational philosophy. Moving forward, we envision offering our students immersive learning opportunities through study tours to esteemed institutions like ISRO and NASA. Additionally, we’re exploring the establishment of a space and aviation club within our schools. With these initiatives, we aim to stay at the forefront of providing quality learning experiences that go beyond the traditional classroom setting, setting a benchmark for educational excellence.
