Transforming education through technology – Dr B Meadows, Principal, Mahindra World School, Chengalpattu, Tamil Nadu

by admin

Dr B Meadows has proven her mastery in English education. As a leader, she envisions a school which is ready to take on the challenges of the future by equipping today. Her experience and knowledge have been influential and helpful for her school. She has taken several steps which brought in good results and has been sculpting her mark at Mahindra World School.

As a school which is equipped with all the required tools of future, Mahindra World School prepares its teachers to adapt at a rate faster than others to cater to the change. She has always believed that teachers must stop facing the board on the wall but move away and face the students; use that magic wall with input device in their hands and laps, both inside and outside the classroom.

The basics of computers, which she learnt in the early part of this millennium, have always given her an edge when adapting to modern educational requirements, especially in the post pandemic era.

As a Microsoft Showcase School for more than a decade, Mahindra World School had all the tools for transformation at hand and pandemic necessitated that they sharpen it and put it to good use. Of note, need-based training of teachers sometimes limits their learning to only those areas that need to be used on a daily basis. For example, teachers are aware of how to use Microsoft Teams for online classes, but their knowledge about other apps in the same platform, such as SharePoint or Yammer, is null.

Training plays a vital role in aiding any transformation. Recent initiatives such as

School Innovation Council (SIC)

School Innovation Ambassador Training Program (SIATP)

Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIoT)

Digital Transformation & Holistic Learning (DTHL)

Hybrid Learning, Digital Literacy Program & Skill Hub Initiative

have all been successfully taken up by Mahindra World School in the academic year 2022-23.These initiatives open the doors of opportunities for teachers to equip themselves to aid in that big transformation for students in India.

The program to integrate AIoT in curriculum was launched in New Delhi by CBSE, NITI Aayog and Intel, heralding a new era of learning for students, implementing Design Thinking, Tinkering and Artificial Intelligence. Mahindra World School was one of the 50 CBSE schools from across the country to be part of this launch. Bringing home a futuristic vision for students and sharing it with teachers for implementation was indeed a confounding task for Dr Meadows to begin with. The enormity and complexity of the project, which included understanding the importance of ideas to find solutions and using the tools of tinkering to create a prototype using AI, did baffle the school initially. The onus of orienting teachers of all subjects for this technology-driven transformation was taken up by enthusiastic lead teachers who learnt it all by themselves and willingly taught the team.

Dr Meadows takes pride in being part of those school leaders who initiated transformations in their schools. She is sure that this collective effort will pay rich dividends when the students are equiped with future ready knowledge.
