UGC raises seats for foreign students to foster an international spirit in Indian Universities and colleges

UGC in a recent statement has declared that colleges and universities can reserve
25 per cent seats for foreign students in both UG and PG courses. Earlier, only 15
per cent seats were reserved for them, but now that has been increased by ten per
cent. Foreign students need to have qualifications which are considered equivalent
to that of Indian student’s. Hence, HEI’s will have to adopt a transparent admission
process. HEI’s recognized by the UGC can decide if they want to offer scholarship
or fellowships to foreign students.
Jagadish Kumar, the Head of UGC stated that the inclusion of foreign students will
help flourish an inter-cultural atmosphere. Hence it is advised that HEI’s offer the
designated 25 per cent seats to foreign student. (Any person with a foreign
passport) These guidelines were framed and implemented to make India a
favorable destination for education in the whole world. Other than that,
curriculums have also been internationalized to attract foreign students.
